The John M. Burgess Wellness Center, a 501(c)3 organization, works to address health and environmental issues, as well as health disparities and inequities in the African American community. The center has sponsored exercise, nutrition, and cooking classes, along with seminars to educate people about such serious health issues as diabetes, hypertension, and the effects of lead exposure in children. To encourage healthy eating, the Center has developed a community garden on the church’s grounds, growing vegetables and herbs as well as flowers. Our neighbors are invited to work in the garden as well as to harvest its crop for their personal use.
